Beatrix Gates and Aimee Liu, somewhat related: When I was in college, a teacher in my Chinese literature class told us that we, as nonnative speakers of Mandarin, would never be able to write poetry in Chinese. That comment has stayed with me for decades. It may be that he wanted us to appreciate the way the poems sounded in Chinese, to perfect our understanding. It may be that he didn't have the language to express what he truly meant. It may be that he was no Alastair Reed. I have a selection of Neruda's poems around here somewhere. I'll try to find them!
