Finding Words For the Unspeakable
One writer's greater purpose than to be produced or published
I was being asked to represent someone important to my small town, and I had to get this right. I had to.
Hello Loreates,
Almost exactly six years ago, in another but still inexplicably parallel reality, my friend and MFA faculty colleague Darrah Cloud published the devastating essay below in the original Writer in The World. At the time, Darrah served as town supervisor and owned the local bar in the hub of Pine Plains, NY. She is also a prolific playwright, screenwriter, poet, and teacher of creative writing.
When we taught together, Darrah always dazzled me with her energetic compassion, kindness, and enthusiasm for our students and the world in general. You’ll find all those qualities in her work. You’ll also find a profound lesson about the ultimate value of the work that we writers do, day in and day out. Hint: it does not come from getting published or produced.
If you don’t know her already, it is my distinct honor to introduce you to the inestimable Darrah Cloud .
Plea…
