Good morning, Loreates,
I was at the beach the other day and thought, why can’t a metaphortograph move and make noise? So here’s a very brief video to launch your writing week. It’s called “Waiting,” and that’s your prompt! Details below.
Write on!
Aimee
Metaphortography offers a quick dose of visual and literary inspiration to launch your writing week. This is the Monday section of Aimee Liu’s MFA Lore.
Write around the experience of Waiting
Watch the video above. Remember that waiting is not a passive activity. There’s a lot going on as one waits.
Put yourself or your character in a different moment of anticipation, and jot down quick answers to the following questions. Then write the scene or story of waiting that emerges, using these prompts:
What are you waiting for, and why?
What are you physically doing as you wait?
How does this waiting make your body feel?
What do you think about while you’re waiting?
Do you desire, or dread, what you’re waiting for? Or, are you indifferent?
What will it mean if you get what you’re waiting for?
How will its arrival change your life or your sense of yourself?
Who else is affected by the change you’re waiting for? How?
What do you notice around you as you wait?
What if your wait is futile?
How long are you willing to wait?
What will you do if you quit waiting?
How does the prospect of quitting make you feel physically?
How does the prospect of quitting make you feel about yourself?

Terrific exercise, Aimee!
What a powerful prompt. I can see how it would work very well in both novels I’m juggling at once, a revision and a first draft. Thank you!
